A Greer area high school is at the top of its class for public schools in the Greenville Metro area – according to an annual ranking from US News & World Report.
Riverside High School ranked #1 among Greenville County Schools, #1 in the Greenville-Metro area (which includes several Upstate counties), and #13 in the state of South Carolina.
The report cited Riverside’s Advanced Placement courses, college readiness, state testing results, and graduation rate among other factors.

Using the game of softball to support the families of officers killed in the line of duty…
The Greer Police Department is hosting the 14th annual Upstate SC Law Enforcement Memorial Softball Tournament this weekend at Century Park. Games begin tomorrow morning at 7:30.
Ten teams from Upstate public safety departments are competing in this year’s tournament. It’s free to attend the games, but you can show your support for the families of fallen officers by making a donation, entering a raffle, or purchasing a t-shirt and concessions while you’re there.
If you can’t make it to the tournament, you can still support the cause by going to the Upstate SC Law Enforcement Memorial Fund Facebook page.

Mayor Rick Danner helped kick off a celebration of new beginnings at a historic location in downtown Greer.
Trade Street Social hosted a ribbon-cutting event yesterday with the support of the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Danner thanked the owners for investing in the section of downtown where Greer got its start almost 150 years ago and pledged the city’s support for a “renaissance” in that area.
Trade Street Social has a full menu, bar, and golf simulators customers can reserve online for up to six people at a time.

A partnership between the Greer Police Department and the Greer Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association helped more than a hundred students start the school year with the supplies they need.
This past weekend at B.P. Edwards Park, officers handed out more than 130 backpacks filled with supplies to Greer area elementary and middle school students.
Members of the the Greer Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association hosted a Pack-a-Patrol event to collect the supplies that went into the backpacks. The Back-to-School giveaway has been running for several years and has helped hundreds of students.

Anyone interested in running for City Council Districts 2, 4, or 6 or the Greer CPW post should meet with the municipal clerk at Greer City Hall before noon on Friday, August 15.

Southern Sisters Boutique threw a grand opening party yesterday at its new location at 101 N. Main St.
Dozens of people packed the new space which was hopping with activities, live music, and give-aways.
