Monday, 9:45 p.m. Update
City of Greer offices will operate on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, January 27. Offices will open for business at 10 a.m. Please watch our website and social media for changes in events and programming on the calendar for Tuesday. Staff will assess the condition of our facilities on Tuesday to decide if activities need to be delayed or canceled.
The City Council Audit workshop at 5:30 p.m. and the City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. should happen as scheduled unless conditions change dramatically.
Monday's trash collection routes will run Tuesday starting at 9 a.m. Some city streets on Monday's normal schedule are still not safe for a trash truck to navigate, so those pickups will be delayed until the roads are clear. We'll post updates about this week's trash collection schedule on this page as we get new information. Thanks for your patience and consideration for the safety of the truck drivers and their teammates.
Please continue to use caution on the roads. Any moisture that was on the ground when the sun went down will refreeze overnight. Even roads that seemed clear on Monday might have invisible slick spots by Tuesday morning. If you have to drive anywhere, plan for longer commute times and slow down no matter how clear the roads appear.
Stay safe, Greer.
Monday, 2:45 p.m. Update
City of Greer offices are closed today and will operate on a two-hour delay on Tuesday, January 27. That means the city will be open for business at 10 a.m.
Monday, Noon Update
City crews have done a pass on Highway 80 from Highway 14 to Highway 29. It's going to take a significant effort to get roads clear, so please be patient. Even after the roads are passable, please try to stay off them as much as possible. The temperature is going to drop significantly tonight, so the more work the teams can do to clear the roads during the day, the better off we will be later.
Monday, 9:45 a.m. Update
Our city crews have been out working on the roads for hours this morning. They've done significant work on Highway 14/Main St. and S. Buncombe. It's going to take some time, but they are doing what they can to make the roads in the City of Greer safe. Please stay off the streets unless you have to go out so they can safely do their jobs.
Sunday, 10:00 p.m. Update
It's currently above freezing, so we're seeing some melting on the roads. All of that liquid is expected to refreeze overnight, so driving conditions are likely to be treacherous into the morning.
Specific reports from the roads:
Highway 14/Main St. in Greer is pretty clear as of 10pm, but, again, watch for refreezing overnight.
S. Buncombe through Greer hasn't been cleared, but there are "ruts" in the road formed by vehicle tires. If you have to go out on the road (not recommended), go slowly and try to stay within those tracks.
SC DOT has not yet plowed Highway 29/Wade Hampton through the Greer area.
Reminder that Greenville County Schools and Spartanburg District 5 are on e-learning days tomorrow. City of Greer offices, parks, athletic fields, and Convenience Center are closed. Municipal Court is canceled for the week. Find a complete list of closings/cancellations here.
Stay safe, everyone.
Sunday, 5:30 p.m. Update
Due to weather conditions, Meridian Waste will not run Monday's trash collection routes in the City of Greer. If it is safe to resume collection on Tuesday, the weekly schedule will shift by a day. We'll keep you posted.
Conditions on the roads are deteriorating. Stay off them if you can.
The (hopefully) final wave of sleet and freezing rain is falling in the Greer area right now. Forecasters are expecting some strong wind gusts, and that could lead to downed trees and power lines.
Sunday, 2:15 p.m. Update
The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport has canceled all departure and arrival flights today due to conditions on the runways. GSP says it's working hard to clear the ice and resume operation, but if you have travel plans over the coming days, check with your airline before you head to the airport.
Reminder that Greer City offices will be closed on Monday.
Both Greenville County Schools and Spartanburg District 5 are on e-learning days Monday. Follow this page for our latest list of closings, cancellations, and delays.
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. Update
Charge your devices now if you can. The National Weather Service says the greatest chance of power outages is from 2 to 4 p.m. this afternoon when heavy freezing rain is expected to fall throughout the Greer area. To make matters worse, we might experience some pretty strong wind gusts which could cause trees and power lines to snap.
Sunday, 10:30 a.m. Update
We'll have more detailed information for you after a briefing that starts at 11 a.m. In the meantime, we want to point you to a place where you can get help if you need it. Greenville County Emergency Management has set up this page as a one-stop-shop for winter storm information and resources. If you need assistance, you can call the Community Information Line at 864-467-3428.
Spartanburg County Emergency Management is manning an Unmet Needs Hotline. You can call or text 864-860-1667 for help.
As a reminder, don't call 911 to report power outages or if you aren't in immediate danger. Keep those lines clear for people who need urgent help. The City of Greer's non-emergency line is 864-848-2151.
Sunday, 9:45 a.m. Update
Our Greer Police Department Patrol Supervisor reports the roads are getting pretty bad now. Please help our first responders and power providers by staying off the streets.
If you MUST go out on the roads, use extreme caution and try to check conditions before you head out. The South Carolina Department of Transportation has a tool that shows current conditions on state roads. You can go to this site, click on "Traffic & Road Conditions," select your county, and hit "Go" for the latest report.
If you are driving anywhere out of necessity, take an emergency kit with you, and don't forget extra blankets to keep you warm if you get stranded.
Sunday, 8:20 a.m. Update
It might look pretty out there this morning, folks, but don't let the looks deceive you. Conditions are dangerous, and they're going to get worse. Greer CPW reports no power outages as of this posting, but the freezing rain is still coming down. Help them keep the power on by staying off the slick roads. You staying home will also help keep the path clear for first responders.
Important reminder: Do not call 911 unless you are facing imminent danger to life or property.
For all other incident reports, please use the non-emergency numbers: 864-848-2151 or 864-848-2152.
Saturday, 8:35 p.m. Update
In its 8pm update, the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg reported, "Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly this evening as wintry precipitation spreads east from the mountains. Roads and other surfaces may become icy in a short period of time as temperatures continue to fall and freezing rain spreads toward the I-85 corridor through midnight."
Saturday 7:45 p.m. Update
All City of Greer offices will be closed on Monday, January 26, 2026 due to forecasted inclement weather. Essential personnel will report as scheduled to keep the community safe through this severe winter weather event.
Saturday, 7:00 p.m. Update
We're right at the freezing mark in Greenville and Spartanburg counties now. Light sleet is falling in some places, but forecasters say this is just the beginning. Precipitation could stick around for the next 18 hours or more.
Our teams have been out pre-treating the roads, but now is the time to hunker down if you can.
Saturday, 1:30 p.m. Update
Our Public Services team has just finished applying a specialized ice melt mixture to the pavers on Trade Street. The bricks are a huge part of the character of downtown Greer, and we want to protect that investment. You can't run a snow plow over a brick road, so preemptive action is the best bet to ensure the street stays in good shape and people walking along Trade are safe.
Trade St. will remain closed from W. Poinsett to Randall until weather conditions are suitable to open it.
Saturday, Noon Update
We just got off an update call with agencies from across Greenville County and the state of South Carolina. Here are some important take-aways:
The latest forecast is showing we could get 3/4" to 1" of sleet and freezing rain (which means ice). We'll likely see conditions start to worsen this afternoon and overnight.
The Emergency Operations Center is now staffing a Community Information Line. You can call this number if you need to know where to find resources to keep you safe during the storm. The number is 864-467-3428.
First responders from the other parts of the state are here to help. They're ready to deploy if our emergency crews need backup.
Greer CPW has brought in mutual aid from Florida and Michigan to help in the storm response. Check CPW's website for important information and updates.
Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville is now open as a warming shelter. Greenville County Animal Care has brought in its disaster trailer to house pets of people who are staying in the shelter. You must stay in the shelter to take care of your pets. No drop-offs.
