Inland Port Greer has expanded its container yard to double cargo capacity and has added more than 9,000 feet of track in order to handle longer trains that carry more products. Norfolk Southern runs daily to and from the Port of Charleston improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions for customers. The expansion project will allow the port team to perform 300,000 rail lifts each year.

“Having this rail connection…is a tremendous benefit for port-dependent businesses,” said SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin. “We continue to invest in our operations to deliver excellent service to our customers and for our state.”

Two new freestanding, portable cranes will soon be available to move containers around Inland Port Greer. Crews are still working on the expansion of the port’s chassis yard and the new maintenance and operations buildings. The port’s leaders say the entire expansion project is still on track to be finished in late spring 2025.

The Port of Charleston operates through the deepest harbor on the East Coast and is the eighth largest port in the country.
